Grade: B+
John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe, Smallville, Passions, Desperate Housewives) has got it going on. He's the captain of the basketball team. He's good looking. He's dating the head cheerleader.
He's dating the overachiever.
He's dating the vegan teen activist.
See, John's something of a player. And he's smart. He dates girls from different cliques, because he knows they won't talk to each other. But when the girls' gym classes are merged into one, the secret comes out -- violently -- among the three girls.
Enter Kate (Brittany Snow, "Whisper of the Heart", "The Pacifier"), the new girl. She's used to being invisible, and she knows about jerk guys: her mother Lori (Jenny McCarthy) has dated a string of them. But because she gets caught between the other three girls in the fight -- overachieving Carrie (Arielle Kebbel, "Aquamarine"), activist Beth (Sophia Bush, "Stay Alive"), and cheerleader Heather (Ashanti, "The Muppets Wizard of Oz") -- she becomes the center of a plan to transform Kate from totally invisible to totally invitable, then use her to make John Tucker fall in hopeless love and then mercilessly break his heart!
Of course, their initial plan is simple humiliation. But Tucker possesses a gift -- anything used against him, he can spin into a positive. Give him estrogen to feminize his emotions? He's the new sensitive male. Trick him into wearing a female thong? Suddenly he's on the cutting edge of a new fashion statement. Nope, breaking his heart is the only thing that's going to work on good old John.
As Kate's coolness factor starts to rise, John starts to pursue her more and more. The problem? Kate starts to really fall for John -- or at least feel sorry for him, as she develops recriminations about where things are going and what she's becoming. Because the guy she's really perfect for is John's younger brother, Scott (Penn Badgley) -- the "Other Tucker". (Although a number of viewers might argue that, after the kissing instruction scene with Sophia Bush, Kate should consider playing for the other team.)
John Tucker Must Die! Beware of girls eating chocolate; they
tend to begin plotting. (L-R: Ashanti, Arielle Kebbel, Sophia Bush,
Brittany Snow)
Jesse Metcalfe brings a brand of "Ferris Bueller" confidence to his role of John tucker, and Brittany Snow excels at portraying clumsy/cute; but Jenny McCarthy just isn't believable as the concerned mother who ultimately sees how her dating habits have been affecting her daughter's life. However, McCarthy's parts, while plot essential, are kept to a minimum, and the film is kept fresh and fun with a modern pop soundtrack featuring Nelly Furtado, Stefy, The All-American Rejects, Hudson, People in Planes, and a host of others.
The DVD includes both the widescreen and fullscreen presentations of "John Tucker Must Die", in both theatrical and unrated editions, on one double-sided disc. Because of this design, the bonus features are split between the two sides. On the widescreen side, you get the featurettes "Grrrl Power" (4:15) where the actors and director talk about the making of the movie, "Cutting Class with Jesse Metcalfe" (3:55) which is a video tour of the set, and "Kodiak Yearbook" (3:45), where the stars look back on their own high school experiences. The fullscreen side has two deleted scenes, a two-minute look at the basketball stunts, the "'John Tucker Must Die' Dating Quiz" (2:45) which is not interactive, but rather a talk through of the scenes of the film with the narrator giving choices to a question and then providing the answer, and a concert video by People in Planes of their song "Instantly Gratified". The feature presentation on both sides has an optional commentary track by Director Betty Thomas and Editor Matthew Friedman.
Audio can be set to English 5.1 Dolby Surround, Spanish Dolby Surround, French Dolby Surround, with optional subtitles in English and Spanish.
