Where do you turn when someone disappears? The New York Missing Persons Squad, a division of the FBI. Lead by Jack Malone (Anthony LaPaglia), the agents are tasked with trying to determine whether a crime occurred and how to find the missing person.
In order to find the missing person, the agents must learn about the person, who they were, where they went, what they did, and who they know. They painstakingly rebuild the last day of the missing person, searching for clues as to what might have happened and who might have been involved.
As they conduct their investigations, the investigations can lead to revelations about the lives of the agents. The missing persons range from priests and violinists to fireman and billionaires. The second season of Without a Trace features 24 episodes that originally aired on CBS from September 25, 2003 through May 20, 2004.
Each episoide addresses just one case so the episodes can be watched in any order. However, there are some overarching themes and character development that makes chronological viewing more important. All of the episodes have the same basic format. The key differences arrive in the missing persons and the stories behind their lives and disappearances.
This season's most emotional episode was the seventh episode entitled, "A Tree Falls." It surrounds the disappearance of a young boy caught up in the world of illegal immigration. Another notable episode is "Gung Ho" which centers around a soldier injured in Iraq. Malone and Agent Danny Taylor (Enrique Murciano) travel to Iraq to find out what happened. This episode provides a glimpse, although fictionalized, of the danger our soldiers face.
Without a Trace on DVD is a good purchase for anyone who likes invesigations. As a huge fan of CSI, I figured I'd like this show. It's very different but still follows a similar path. One disappointment with the DVD release is the lack of bonus features. There are only a few deleted scenes. No commentaries, no interviews, no behind-the-scenes features.
Priced around $45 online, the second season release of Without a Trace follows the pricing scheme of other CBS television series. They are more expensive than other releases which makes it a little more difficult to recommend. It would probably be wiser to wait a while before purchasing this set for the price to drop or for a sale. One thing to watch out for: the combined first and second season set is more expensive, in some cases more than twice as expensive as simply purchasing each season separately.
