Better days gone by. That's the way my grandmother described the life depicted on The Waltons, the critically-acclaimed series about a family living in the depression era. This new release contains all 24 episodes from the fifth season which originally aired on CBS from September 23, 1976 through March 17, 1977.

The series follows the lives on the Walton family members with narration done by John-Boy (Richard Thomas). John-Boy is an aspiring writer and in this season, first publication of the new Blue Ridge Chronicle hits the streets. Joining John-Boy atop Walton Mountain are his six siblings, his parents, and his grandparents.

The Waltons is a step back in time to an era of hard work, inconvenience, and strong family unity. Set in the 1930s, many modern-day conveniences are just beginning to show up. The series' style lead to similar programs including Little House on the Prairie. It's not so much entertainment as it is a chance to visit (or re-visit) a different era of history. It's also a chance to be uplifted in an era of senseless of comedies and action-packed dramas.

This season features a number of such episodes. The first Walton child will be married, and John-Boy's long-labored book is set to be published. My favorite episode was "The Hiding Place." A German cousin of the Baldwins comes to visit. As the series is set in the era prior to World War II, John-Boy has some questions about a certain German by the name of Adolf Hitler.

The series is packaged on four double-sided discs and one single-sided disc in three slim cases. There are no bonus features included. The video quality of this release leaves a lot to be desired. The images could be more crisp, and the colors a little less dull. At an average online price around $35, the 20 hours of entertainment provided by this release is worth the price. For a parent or grandparent that misses "the good ol' days," the fifth season of The Waltons would make a perfect gift.
