A Dose of Reality: American Idol 6: Women's Week 3
by The Trades Staff
Published: March 8, 2007
The women are trying to outperform the men...and are doing an excellent job. Alaina and Leslie went home last week after lackluster performances. After tonight, we are down to the Final 12.

Andrea, Chad, Molly and Paul give you their opinions below. If you want to give them yours, use the Contact Us link at the bottom right of the page.

Jordin Sparks
Andrea writes: I love this song! This is how to start off the show. It was an exciting tune, a phenomenal performance. This was not about being perfect - one or two notes out of place didn't matter. This was about proving herself in this competition and she did. She really does deserve to be there.

Chad writes: It started off sounding a little weird but it was an excellent start to the show. This is one of the reasons that this year's winner is likely to be a female. Although Lakisha and Melinda are fierce competition, Jordin showed that she wants it too.

Molly writes: Great song choice, good execution. I thought Jordin's voice sounded a little tight. But it was still enjoyable, and a good start to the show.

Paul writes: Tonight it’s the girls turn to reveal their “secret talents,” and Jordin shares that she’s an athletic supporter: she’s a big football fan. In fact, she at one point wanted to play professionally. Well, she’s got the build for it. I know Ryan Seacrest is tiny, but Jordin is like two feet taller than him. The song wasn’t the best match for Jordin, but she’s got great energy, and a voice as big as her hulking frame. Top 12, here she comes.

Sabrina Sloan
Andrea writes: She's good - I'll give her that. But there's just something about this girl that rubbed me the wrong way this week. It was a technically good performance, but lacked believability. Simon was right - this was not up to par. She'll still go through, but she'll really have to do something drastic next week to make an impression.

Chad writes: Wow. Two good performances in a row. Tonight may be a good night. Her voice was a little shaky at a couple of points but it was still a great performance. Great song choice too.

Molly writes: Every time I see Sabrina, I get impressed by her all over again. She has a strong voice and a terrific sense of style on the stage.

Paul writes: Sabrina’s another one with a great big voice, but she’s not quite all the way there yet. Simon (as usual) is right—Sabrina is a little mechanical, a little robotic. I think Sabrina and Jordin’s voices are equally good—but Sabrina is lacking the spunky personality. I think Sabrina will make it into the Top 12. I don’t think she’ll make it much further.

Antonella Barba
Andrea writes: I really feel for this girl. She's the worst singer left, and I think she knows it. I didn't like the song because she was like a robot - the tune didn't flow from her. There was very little personality. It seems like she's declining throughout this process. PLEASE America - make the right decision and put this poor girl (and the viewing audience) out of her misery.

Chad writes: Well, we had two good performances but someone has to be bad, right? Here's one of them. I love that song but it was sung very badly. The performance was boring. It's time to send her back to her regular job...and we all know what that is.

Molly writes: Come on, America. The joke's over, and now it's just mean keeping this girl on the show. (Besides, the joke's on you, since she keeps getting worse every week.) She's simply not talented enough to be in this competition.

Paul writes: Antonella’s hidden talent is…oh, the places I could go with this one. Actually, her talent is she can play the violin. Antonella’s taken a lot of heat for those pictures. But I’m going to be the defender of Antonella Barba. Be honest, people: in this age of digital cameras, who among us hasn’t posed for a few naughty pictures? The latest pictures, of Antonella frolicking in a WW II Memorial Fountain in a wet t-shirt and panties, are in poor taste. I mean, it’s a national monument. But you know what? Antonella is uninhibited, and comfortable with her body. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But when it comes to anything to do with sex—especially a woman being comfortable with her sexuality—we all turn into Puritans. Antonella should go home because, singing-wise, she’s out of her league. She shouldn’t go because of a few risqué pictures.

Haley Scarnato
Andrea writes: I could tell she was enjoying herself on this song, but it wasn't a good enough performance to keep her there. She's just not as strong as her competition. I'm really not sure what to say about it, other than what Simon said - she's forgettable. It's harsh, but true. I barely remember her name. Ask me what she sang during any of her auditions, and I couldn't tell you.

Chad writes: I think I've heard that song before but I'm not sure. Regardless, I liked it and I liked her singing. It was a basic performance with nothing too impressive. Unfortunately, I think she is going to be overshadowed by the other big performances tonight.

Molly writes: Haley is an interesting one. I like her voice, and I thought she did a great job with this song. It wasn't an edgy or innovative performance, but just nice, light ear candy. I was intrigued by Simon's reference to it being like a ghastly high school musical, because I wasn't sure if he might have been referring to the mega-popular "High School Musical" movie. Haley's performance would fit perfectly into that Disney radio mold, and I wondered if the song choice was to show her commercial viability if she's kicked off American Idol. On the other hand, considering that kids aged 2 to 11 are reported to make up approximately 10% of American Idol's viewing audience, and most likely the tweeners make up an even higher percentage and vote more often, maybe it was a clever song choice to deliver something tweener friendly.

Paul writes: Haley’s not as interesting as Jordin or Antonella, and she’s not as talented as Lakisha or Melinda. But there’s something about her I like. I disagree with Simon—she wasn’t “horrible.” Haley’s got a good voice, and I think she has the potential to get even better. Don’t count this one out yet.

Stephanie Edwards
Andrea writes: I might get raked over the coals for this, but she's boring now, and I have to agree, she's trying to match the previous artists note for note. Every week, it's the same type of song. Where's the originality? She needs to find a song she can twist to make her own. She's good and we all know it. Why not give us the extra bang this week to make sure that you stay in the top 12? I thought this was a cop out. It was sung well. That's about all I can say.

Chad writes: Once again, I hated her song choice. I don't think she's a bad singer but she keeps choosing horrible songs.

Molly writes: This was a good performance, but not her best. And while I like Stephanie, I think she's got a lot of competition in the "power singer" department. She's good, but she needs to bring something more distinctive to her performances.

Paul writes: Stephanie surprised me: she hasn’t made much of an impression on me so far. But she stepped it up tonight. She’s still kind of boring—but she’s slowly coming out of her shell. She’s another one to keep an eye on.

Lakisha Jones
Andrea writes: Dear God I love this woman, but I HATE Whitney. She sounded a little TOO much like Whitney for my liking, but she's still a phenom. Truly one of the ones to beat in this competition, she's still fighting to be there.

Chad writes: It's tough to sing a Whitney song but she did it very well. Just choosing a Whitney song is bold. She is definitely a frontrunner to win.

Molly writes: You now, maybe the reason I'm always surprised anew by Sabrina is that when LaKisha sings, she blows everyone else away. As soon as she sings, it feels like the competition is over. (And I love how much Simon enjoys LaKisha, too. He really sparkles with her.)

Paul writes: Lakisha and Ryan continue their awkward flirtation, with Lakisha asking Ryan for a hug. In a deep, “sexy” tone, Ryan replies, “You know it.” You’re not fooling anyone, Ryan. Lakisha took on Whitney, and she sounded great (she always does), but to me, she didn’t quite hit the mark. Whitney is one of a kind, and even Lakisha, talented as she is, can’t compare. It was good, but not amazing.

Gina Glocksen
Andrea writes: I think this was THE most exciting performance so far this season. It's a brave woman who takes on Amy Lee and does it justice. Gina went all out on this song, interacting with the band, and showing us who she TRULY is. She's real folks. She could really go far. Like with Jordin, one or two bad notes don't make a lick of difference - she's a star.

Chad writes: She picked a fun song which definitely helps. She sang it pretty well. If she'd just fix her funky appearance, I might really like her.

Molly writes: Man, Gina is bringing it tonight! While I hate her outfit, this is the best I've heard her sing.

Paul writes: I hate this song (I change it every time it comes on the radio), but I like Gina, and I like the tough rock chick vibe. Gina oversang it—it was far from her best performance—but I’m hoping she makes it into the Top 12.

Melinda Doolittle
Andrea writes: A total throwback to the 40's, I immediately saw the stage transformed to a smokey nightclub. She owned that stage. One of the few PERFECT performances we will see this season. Pimp spot earned, and deserved. She is IT.

Chad writes: In the words of Randy, this was HOT!!! Awesome song choice. Awesome performance. If Lakisha doesn't win, Melinda will.

Molly writes: Melinda is on fire! Definitely my favorite of her performances, and one of the tops of (this admittedly lackluster) season.

Paul writes: How great is Melinda. She is so sweet and so much fun—I just want to scoop her up and hug her. I love this woman. The song was perfect for her, and she nailed it. Move over, Lakisha—there’s a new frontrunner in town.
