Interview: James Lesure - On the Money
by Scott Juba Published: October 26, 2007
Given the number of new shows that fail each year, any time an actor signs on for a new series, he’s taking a gamble. In 2003, James Lesure gambled on the NBC series Las Vegas and hit the jackpot.
Now in its fifth season, Las Vegas will celebrate its 100th episode taping next week. Lesure says he never anticipated the longevity the series has enjoyed. “I had no idea,” he tells me. “I just know I was enamored with the pilot and was excited about that. That’s all I was thinking of [at the time].”
Unfortunately, Las Vegas and all other television shows could soon be forced to halt production if the growing possibility of a writers’ strike becomes a reality. Lesure says he remains uncertain of how long the production of Las Vegas can continue if the writers strike. “I know the talk about a month ago was trying to get a bunch of scripts out so we could keep going,” Lesure says. “I don’t know if they’ve done that or not.”
With the SAG and DGA contracts expiring in 2008, actors, directors and writers could all be on strike by next summer. While Lesure says he understands the serious consequences a strike could have, he remains lighthearted about the situation. “I have a job, and I’m working at it, but I’m also putting in applications at Target and some of the local supermarkets in case the strike lasts for too long,” Lesure jokes.
During our conversation, Lesure’s lighthearted nature comes through on a number of topics, including his decision to buy a Toyota Hybrid in an effort to become more eco-conscious. “It’s not the sexiest thing in the world,” he says with a laugh, “but it gets me from point A to point B.”
Lesure says he became motivated to become more eco-conscious after watching films such as an “Inconvenient Truth” and learning the facts of the climate crisis. “Global warming, I believe it,” he simply states. “Some of the facts that have been laid out make sense to me. So I said, let me do my part to help make this world a better place. I don’t even like to litter. I like things that my eyes fall upon to be as clean and lovely as possible.”
While Lesure’s environmental concerns represent his willingness to tackle big issues off-screen, tonight’s episode of Las Vegas will prove he’s capable of taking on serious matters on-screen as well. The episode deals with domestic abuse, but Lesure says regardless of the subject matter, bringing believability to a performance remains key. “With every script, I’m going to try to bring an element of believability and quality to the story,” he says. “I approach every episode like that.”
That same approach shined through on last season’s finale of Lost, in which Lesure had a guest-starring role alongside Matthew Fox. So, will Lesure appear on Lost in the future? “I’m hoping to,” he says. “Right now, Las Vegas wouldn’t allow me to do it. We may end the season [of Las Vegas] in January. If there’s still something for me to do then, I’m definitely open to it. I had a really good time.”
Lesure also received acclaim for his portrayal of Captain Boyle on Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which is now available on DVD. “It was very different from what we do on Las Vegas, so I appreciated that experience,” Lesure says of his 5-episode stint on the show.
As for the future, Lesure tells me he hopes to move into producing in order to gain more creative control over his projects. “I feel like I can have more control over some of the artitistic stuff I’m involved in if I’m in a producing capacity. I hope to have a stronger foothold in that aspect of the business. The acting and producing is what I’m into.”
If the quality of Lesure’s work to date provides any indication, his projects should continue to be on the money.
