Lost and Delirious: Survivor: Africa - Episode 10: The Telephone Man Gets Disconnected
by Jim Van Nest
Published: December 21, 2001
Hello good people and welcome back to another edition of Lost and Delirious. We had some last minute Christmas shopping to do tonight, so I didn't get to watch the show til about 11:00 PM. With that in mind, this week's recap will be a little bit shorter than usual, as I need to get some sleep. So, let's not waste any time and get right to it.
ARE THEY SURE MOTOMAJI DOESN'T MEAN 'DINNER'?
We join the story late night after voting off Brandon in Tribal Council #9. Ethan and Kim J are discussing whether or not they can trust Lex. The fact that he bailed on their alliance that easily has both of them a little on edge. A little later, however, while Ethan and Kim P are on watch, any thoughts of strategies, alliances, votes or challenges are completely wiped out of their minds as they hear a lioness circling the camp growling and grunting. Neither one of them are sure why she's making the sound that she is, but they both become concerned that she could be calling other lions and you can see a genuine, straight to the core of their existence fear on both of their faces. Course, you know you can count on Hillbilly Tom to lighten the mood by coming up behind Ethan whispering, "I'll protect you."
EXHAUSTION AND HUNGER BEGIN TO SET IN
After a scary night, all of the survivors wake to realize that they have no strength whatsoever. It's as if something came through in the night and sucked the life right out of them. All of them are noticing it and none of them really care to hide it. People dragging their feet. Everyone's sitting or lying around. Lex and Tom are discussing how much weight Tom's lost. Tom figures in the neighborhood of 40 pounds. Frank looks downright sick he's so thin. The reason for the lack of energy? That's simple, lack of food. Lex estimates that they're all eating around 200 calories a day. They basically have two different meals. Corn meal mush or some sort of corn broth soup stuff with corn in it. Tom compares the food to eating chalk.
Around the same time we're treated to a shot of Kim J's legs and they are incredibly swollen above her sock line and below her knees. And her feet are swollen so much she can hardly tie her shoes anymore. The 30 days in Africa have definitely taken their toll on Kim and everyone else. But don' t think this caused a stop in strategizing. It didn't. Ethan and Tom are now discussing Lex and his failure to live up to the alliance. Tom's pretty pissed and now doesn't trust Lex at all. In his eyes, he and Ethan are in charge now, and if Lex wants to go against them...he can go too. All this leads up to a mail call that hints that the reward this time around will be food and some pretty darn good food at that.
REWARD CHALLENGE #10
This week's reward challenge is the auction challenge they seem to have every time. Each of the Survivors is given a wallet with 20,000 shillings in it. They can use these shillings to bid on different food items. We've seen it before, so let's get to the items, the price and the winner:
| Food Item | Price paid | Winner |
| Cup of Coffee/Choc. Croissant | 3000 | Lex |
| Cheese and Crackers | 6000 | Kim J |
| Glass of Beer | 1000 | Tom |
| Sundae w/ Choc. Syrup | 12,500 | Kim P |
| Mug of Choc. Syrup | 5000 | Ethan |
| Mystery (Fried Chicken, Potatoes, Veggies) | 11,000 | Kim J |
| One Piece Chicken, Potatoes | 10,000 | Kim sells to Lex |
| Hoagie Sandwich | 16,500 | Teresa/Frank |
| Mystery (Pancakes, Ham, Grits) | 9000 | Tom/Ethan |
The last item provided quite the laugh as Tom was struck by the irony of one of the food items being ham, and Ethan who split the cost with Tom is Jewish, so he won't eat any of the ham. Tom really got a kick out of it and made pretty much fun of Ethan for it. The others looked at him rather oddly, but Ethan didn't seem bothered by it at all.
WITH FULL BELLIES, IT'S TIME FOR A SHOWER
When they got back to camp, in interviews Kim P, Lex and Ethan all mentioned that they know Tom is just goofing around and meant nothing by it. In fact, Ethan said that Tom gives him trouble for being Jewish all the time and in return, Ethan makes fun of Tom for being fat and having a big ole boil on his neck. It's all in fun, folks. All in fun.
After everyone's food had settled, it was time to head on over to the watering hole and gets cleaned up. Tom being the biggest gets the job of pouring water on everyone. Not surprisingly, Ethan and Lex get little quick showers, but Ton spends much time "cleaning up Kim P." Once again, you can see the horndog in Tom come out as he thoroughly enjoys helping the ladies get clean. You can tell that everyone in the tribe is really getting along rather well. It makes Ethan mention that it's a shame that they have to vote anyone off, they're getting along so well. But...that's the game, isn't it?
IMMUNITY CHALLENGE #10
This week's immunity challenge is also a challenge they've done on all 3 Survivors. This is the one where Jeff tells a story and then they have to answer questions about the story he just told. Well, this story is all about the life of a Samburu Warrior. After the story, the players have to run to one of 7 stations. There will be a question and 2 ostrich eggs. They select the egg by what they think is the correct answer, break it open and if they are right a colored leather strap should fall out. They tie the strap on their staff and move along. The first one to have 5 straps and make it back to the starting point, wins immunity.
Not much of a play by play til the end. The whole thing basically becomes a match between Lex and Frank. They both have 4 straps when Lex answers his 5th question correctly, but on the way to the starting point, he loses one of his straps. He cannot win without it, so he goes back to look for it. Right about the time he finds it, Frank answers his 5th question right. Lex makes it to the circle first, but does not have the strap fastened on his staff. As he fumbles with it, Frank makes his way to the circle, but unfortunately for Frank, he doesn't make it in time and Lex wins immunity for the second week in a row.
FRANK PROVES TO BE HIS OWN WORST ENEMY
The morning of Tribal Council #10 starts with Frank watching the sunrise and commenting on how incredible it is to be there and to be able to take this all in. At breakfast, Frank decides to let the tribe see a little into the psyche of Frank. Bad move. Not sure how the topic started, but Frank was discussing his stance on firearms, which coincides with the NRA's stance on firearms. And he's discussing how he could kill you with fishing line, etc. Somewhere in there he blasts "the liberal media" and suggests that the US is trying to screw the working class that made this country what it is today. Yadda, yadda, yadda...Writer's aside: The bottom line is this: whether or not you agree with Frank is irrelevant. What's relevant is that on Tribal Council day, pissing people off and giving them a reason to want you gone is an incredibly stupid move. Frank is in dire need of some people skills. Hopefully, he'll watch the tape of this episode and see what an ass he made himself look like and perhaps change his ways, just a little bit.
Even Frank's bestest buddy, Teresa, acknowledges what a bonehead move this was. She said she just wanted to tell him to cut it out and be quiet. Again, he picked the wrong day to make himself stand out in a negative light. Meanwhile we cut to Lex and Ethan discussing how things are going according to plan. Not surprisingly, Teresa has a plan to break up the happy Boran family. She decides to approach Kim J about forming a female alliance with her and Kim P and voting Ethan off this time. Kim questions Teresa's loyalty to her as opposed to Frank and T swears that if they vote together tonight, they are in it til the end. Kim talks it over with Ethan and it's pretty obvious that Ethan and Kim are pretty darn close, and neither one of them will vote for the other, I don't think under any circumstance, save making it to the final 3. So, Kim lets Teresa know that she will not join her in voting for Ethan. So, it becomes obvious that either Frank or Teresa is going to be the one to go.
TRIBAL COUNCIL # 10
It seems that as the show goes on, Jeff has more and more questions to ask, making each Tribal Council a little longer. This time he asks Teresa and Ethan how they can vote someone off right now, and then turn around and ask that person (as a jury member) to give them the $1 million. Basically, they both say that you need to be honest and play the game well and as long as you've been a good player and been straight with everyone and earned their respect, you should be ok come final vote day. He asks Lex how close the game is getting to turning ugly. Lex mentions that it already has turned ugly,. but has gotten much more back to normal lately, though he expects it will get ugly again before all is said and done. He asks Frank if he feels that Samburu and Boran tribal lines still exist. Frank doesn't seem to think so. Too many things have happened and now it's everyone plotting their own strategy, regardless of original tribal affiliation. He asks Kim J if she feels more at ease not being a physical threat now. She said that she is worried coming into every Tribal Council, no matter what her condition is. With all that out of the way, let's vote.
In the biggest bummer of the night, they only show one vote and it's Teresa voting for Frank. She says that it's not a stab in the back but a strategic move. She hated to do it, but had to. Writer's aside: Seems to me that if she felt Frank was a goner and she really wanted to make a strategic move, she should have put a vote on Ethan. Make him a little more vulnerable. Course, that's just me. Anyway, Jeff tallies up the votes and with the exception of Frank's vote for Kim J, the entire tribe voted Frank as the 3rd member of the jury.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
I'm pretty sure this week's winner is a newbie to the QOTW. It came during the Reward Challenge. After Teresa finally bought something and took the first bite of her hoagie, someone asked her if it was any good. Her response is this week's Quote of the Week, "It's good enough to make you wanna slap your mama."
Well, kiddies, that's it for this week's recap. It's time for me to go to bed now! I've updated the voting history chart for your consideration. Until next week, take care and God bless.
